Job Posting: Electronics Designer
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Electronics Designer to join our team in the development and enhancement of the world’s best SCUBA diving computers and other mission critical diving electronics. Over time this candidate will play a lead technical role in electronics designs across the company’s product portfolio.
Electronics designs at Shearwater typically consist of high-density analog and digital circuitry operating at extremely low power. Designs often incorporate multiple microcontrollers, high quality displays and both wired and wireless communications interfaces. Ultimately, the reliability of Shearwater products in the underwater environments they operate is paramount.
Responsibilities and Duties
Electronics Design
- Design analog and digital circuitry as well as designs for wired and wireless communication technologies.
- Ensure robustness and reliability of all designs as well as compliance with relevant EMC and product safety standards.
- Collaborate closely with members of the R&D team to ensure seamless integration of electronic designs into products.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Integrate new technologies and methodologies into electrical designs and drive innovation in product development.
- Identify opportunities for improvement in existing products and processes.
Prototyping and Testing
- Develop and test prototypes, ensuring they meet design specifications and performance requirements.
- Collaborate with test engineers and technicians to ensure thorough and rigorous testing of electrical components and systems.
- Analyze test data and make informed recommendations for design enhancements and improvements.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
Must Have:
- 5 years experience of electronics design for small form-factor products.
- Small-signal analog design experience with op amps and discrete components
Important experience:
- Excellent skills with electronics design applications, such as Altium.
- Understanding of portable and mobile electronics design, such as designs for RF wireless communications, GNSS and rechargeable batteries.
- Design for battery powered brushless (BLDC) motor controllers.
- Knowledge of communications interfaces including high-speed differential signaling, CAN bus, signal integrity and EMI.
An asset:
- Low-level programming and DSP programming
- Hands-on prototyping skills.
- Familiar with product design and development processes
- Experience working in firms with design and manufacturing, knowledge of product safety and EMC standards desirable.
- Post secondary degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related education and experience.
Personal competencies
- Quick, eager learner.
- SCUBA diving experience or an interest in learning to dive is an asset.
- Ability to communicate design work both verbal and written, and interest in training other technical personnel.
- Team Player - Open and approachable, willing to share knowledge and skills.
- Responsible and safety-minded attitude.
- Able to multi-task on concurrent tasks and projects.
Salary Range
Career Band 3 - $90k to $130k
