Ocean Gardener: Eco-Tourism in North Sulawesi

Ocean Gardener: Eco-Tourism in North Sulawesi

How to turn standard dive vacations into meaningful conservation experiences through your partnerships with Murex Manado, Murex Bangka, and Lembeh Resort.

The Resort Partnership Model

Ocean Gardener partners directly with eco-conscious dive resorts to establish active, on-site coral nurseries. This unique model transforms resort house reefs into living classrooms and restoration sites, making conservation a seamless part of the guest experience.

Hands-On Citizen Science

Instead of just observing the reef, visiting divers and snorkelers can actively participate in its recovery. Guests can take part in harvesting temperature-resilient coral fragments from the nurseries and outplanting them onto degraded areas of the reef using low-tech, field-tested methods like Reef Stars, ropes, and tables.

Scalable Educational Courses

To accommodate different holiday schedules and levels of interest, Ocean Gardener offers structured curriculum options right at the resorts:

1-Day Experience: A entry-level introduction featuring a presentation, a nursery snorkel tour, and a hands-on planting and maintenance dive.

3-Day & 5-Day Programs: Deeper dives into the science of coral biology, site selection, and nursery management.

Advanced Certifications: Multi-week intensive courses, such as the 2-Week Acropora ID program or the 4-Week Professional Coral Restoration Specialty, designed for serious students and marine professionals.

Empowering Local Dive Staff

A key component of this project is training the local Indonesian dive guides and resort staff. By teaching them advanced coral identification and restoration techniques, the local community takes long-term ownership of the nurseries, maintaining them year-round and guiding the next wave of eco-tourists.
